Miss Bairnsfather Has Been Consistent

Miss Bairnsfather, who is down to race in the Tyler Memorial over one mile on the final day of the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting at Te Rapa to-day, has been a model of consistency in her three seasons of racing. She has had six wins, nine second placings, six thirds and four fourths in her 29 starts.. Of these she has had three wins and seven placings in 11 starts this season. Miss Bairnsfather is a four-year-old mare by the Wellington Centennial Cup winner Old Bill, who was by Siegfried from Liaison. She is from Fraise, whose dam, Fraisette, was by the Australian sire of sprinters, Valais. It is not surprising, therefore, that Miss Bairnsfather has both brilliance and staying ability. Last week she ran second to Gwen Vaals in the Stewards’ Hadicap at Te Rapa with the steadier of 9.2. ■ She was ridden by her trainer’s son, G. Dulieu, and with half a mile to run she had a fair amount of leeway to make up. She improved her position across the top, and was actually in front just short of the post when Gwen Vaals, with her 271 b advantage, swooped down to beat her home. Although Miss Bairnsfather has drawn wide out to-day, she can be expected to take part in the finish.

Jottings

Detract may break his sequence of placings with an outright win in the Farewell Hack Handicap at Te Rapa to-day. Orthodox, who ran third behind Mr Micawber and Oronoko last week, may make amends in the Southburn Hack Handicap at Timaru to-day. Fonso looks like making the grade against the open sprinters, 'and he will have a chance to get on the winning list in the Fairlie Handicap at Washdyke. He ran second to Vitamin last week, beaten by half a head. Season Nearing End

The Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on June 4,6, and 11, and the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on June 18, will bring down the curtain on the present season in Otago. A special train will be run from Invercargill on the King’s Birthday, the second day of the Wingatui meeting. Chance for Lady Christine Lady Christine began slowly in the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke last week and was never in the call. She looks as though she will return to her good two-year-old form in the near future. If there is to be a surprise in the Fairlie Handicap at Washdyke to-day she may be the one to stage it. Great Northern Candidate Gaiety, who will , compete in the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie next Saturday, will have a raca in the Tararua Hack Handicap at the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting to-day to sharpen her up for her big test. She is reported to have schooled well recently and she should be at her best for the Great Northern. Likely Favourite Incident, who is likely to be supported for the hurdle event at the Manawatu Hunt meeting, ran sqcond to General Lytup in the Hopelands Hack Hurdles at the Woodville meeting earlier this month. An aged gelding by Lord Quex, he was got from Squeeze, by Psychology from Caress (the dam of Cuddle), by Martian from Trichas, by Thrush. Incident is trained at Awapuni by J. J. Woller. Manawatu Prospect

Lady Myrtle came in for solid support in the Foxton Cup last week and the Tiderace mare went a good race, fading over the last bit. A mile seems far enough for her at present. She will be well suited by the seven-furlong journey in the President’s Handicap at the Manawatu Hunt meeting and she should take part in the finish. She has 8.12 to carry, but she should be well up to the task.
