EWES AND CATTLE

Drastic Reduction in Number From the point of view of the weather the- past season had been probably the worst experienced in the province for over 30 years, said Mr A. McMillan, president, in his annual statement to the provincial conference of North Otago Federated Farmers yesterday afternoon. With an 18-inch rainfall in 1948, followed by an extremely dry period in the summer and autumn of this year, feed for stock had been very scarce, resulting in a drastic reduction in the number of both breeding ewes and cattle. Although excellent prices were received from Southland buyers, it was regrettable that some of the farmers had lost some of their capital stock, which loss would be most severely felt in the next year's income. Through lack of rape and other supplementary feed crops lambs had been sold as stores and this prevented farmers from participating in the record high schudule price at the various freezing works. Through drought conditions, many light lambs were killed early in the season.
