WHEAT AND OATS
SALES MORE DIFFICULT IMPORTATIONS RESPONSIBLE A few lines of oats and wheat are still coming to hand, but sales are more difficult to effect than was the case earlier in the season. Owing to the recent shipments of wheat from Australia millers now have their stores full and are finding difficulty in accepting further lines. There is no inquiry from the North Island for oats or barley and consequently merchants ha ye to hold any purchases they make pending a demand later in the season. Chaff continues to be firm, but supplies are sufficient for the local demand, which is not large. The digging of the local main crop of potatoes is now nearing. completion and the quantity received into the stores will be appreciably smaller than that of last year.' While there have been some heavy yields, neither the quantity nor the quality will be up to the high standard of the 1948 crop. There has been more activity in the seed market this week, but little variation has been recorded in respect to prices, the values for main lines being substantially unchanged. Most interest has been centred in Montgomery, Red clover and Brown top. Inquiries have also been received for cocksfoot, but the high prices ruling are a deterrent to free trading in this .line. A few lines of certified perennial ryegrass have changed hands at prices on a lower basis than those ruling during April. The Ryegrass crop in the South Island, however, has not been large, and it is not expected that there will be any great fluctuation in values throughout the season.
Values of White clover, cowgrass, Crested dogstail and Chewings fescue remain unchanged.
