Elephant Allergic To Cranes

PA AUCKLAND, May 27. Doll, one of the less placid ot Wirth’s Circus elephants, hates cranes. With five companions she was alongside the Wanganella yesterday en route to Australia when she saw a crane, remembered harrowing experiences on other occasions and bolted. She jogged through the central wharf gates and set off at a smart clip eastwards along Quay street, followed by her panting and entreating keeper. After a time she slowed down, but refused to listen to reason. The keeper sent for Rill, a more sensible elephant with a persuasive manner, who chatted to Doll and finally led her back to the ship. There Doll found that cranes were not being used at all, but a nice broad gang-plank up which she walked quite happily.
