ARMS REDUCTION
FRANCE SEEKS CENSUS OF MILITARY FORCES NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, May 26. France to-day proposed that the United Nations conduct a census of military forces and conventional arms as the first step towards general arms reduction. The French recommendation was submitted to the United Nations Commission for Conventional Armaments Working- Committee. It also called for the establishment of .an international control organ which would be empowered to make on-the-spot investigations in order to verify all information. Conventional armaments do not include atomic weapons, which are dealt -with by the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission. Mr Jacob Malik (Russia) again brought up the Russian proposals calling on the Big Five Powers to reduce their armaments and armed forces by one-third within a year. The committee adjourned to enable the delegates to submit the French proposal to their Governments for comment.
