DELIVERY OF MILK DURING AFTERNOON DISCUSSED BY BOARD
The possibility of the delivery of milk in Dunedin in the afternoons was placed before the Dunedin Metropolitan Milk Board last night by the representative of the Department of Agriculture, Mr T. McD Foster. The adoption of this proposal, hte said, would mean that Dunedin residents would get fresh milk for tea and for breakfast on the following day. Mr Foster expressed the opinion to the board that afternoon deliveries of milk would come in Dunedin sooner or later, and he contended that it would meet with the approval of customers.
He told the members of the board that 2 o’clock in the afternoon might be set as the time for deliveries to start. When Mr N. D. Anderson asked what the reaction of the Dunedin milk vendors would be to such a scheme, Mr Foster said that they might object to delivering milk in the city during the busy hours, but their opinion could be sought on the matter. He thought that the consumer, who bought the milk, should be entitled to some consideration. Mr Foster said that afternoon deliveries would eliminate the 2 a.m. start at the milk treatment station at Logan Point. Some of the noise around milk depots in the early hours of the morning which was now complained about would also be eliminated If the treatment station had a breakdown, it would have less time to repair the damage than it had at present, but this would not affect the proposal materially. He pointed out that afternoon deliveries were made at Balclutha. Pro-ducer-vendors, he said, might. not welcome a change, as it would interfere to some extent with farm work, but he thought that the vendors should be given the opportunity to deliver in the afternoon if they desired to do so.
Mr Anderson asked that consideration of the subject should be deferred to the next meeting of the board, and at the request of the chairman, Mr W B Taverner, an inquiry is to be made of the Milk Vendors’ Association in the meantime as to its attitude towards afternoon deliveries.
