Bambalina Logical Favourite for Sprint At Timaru Meeting

The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will be concluded to-morrow and again the fields will be numerically strong and the races look very open. PUKAKI HURDLES The card will be opened by the running of the Pukaki Hurdles, and Arctic Circle, winner of the Winchmore' Hack Hurdles at Ashburton, will probably have pride of place on the totalisator. He has 61b more to carry to-morrow, but that should be no trouble to him. Kiloneyf has collected placings In his last two starts, the more recent of which was a third to Knight Crusader and Cloister in the Kildare Hurdles at the CJC Easter meeting. Grill is an improving jumper and his third at Washdyke last Saturday was not without merit. Sir Garnish and Sal's Pal are promising recruits, but may need more experience and for that reason the public may prefer Arctic Circle, Kiloney, and Grill. SOUTHBURN HACK HANDICAP Oronoko's second to Mr Micawber last Saturday will no doubt bring him into favour here. He will meet the winner on 41b better terms for a half-length beating. Orthodox, who finished third to Mr Micawber and Oronoko, has not been raised In the weights and his prospects will be enhanced if the going is heavy. Phillip Laing, who finished fourth, has been dropped 21b and that may help him to run the distance right out. Fresh horses in Flying Fort and Exchange will add to the interest in the race, but first day's form points to Oronoko, Orthodox, and Mr Micawber. SOUTH CANTERBURY HANDICAP A field of a dozen is engaged In the principal race,, the South * Canterbury Handicap, and first day’s form points to Ned Kelly, who led to the last stride in two last Saturday, and the shorter distance to-morrow will be to his liking. Eriskay would probably prefer a little more distance to race over, and this#s also the case with Thornbridge, Pandemonium was a disappointment last Saturday and would need to improve. Kirkella has finished fourth in each of j his last three races and he was finishing on at the end of seven furlongs at the Amberley meeting. Flying Control was raced over nine furlongs at the Amberley meeting and at one stage had a long lead but weakened to third. Saieda looks the most likely of the others, but Ned Kelly, Kirkella, and Flying Control may be selected as the favourites. CRAIGMORE HACK STEEPLES Kassai and Cloister, two well-backed runners in the steeples last Saturday, came down, but with better luck tomorrow they are likely to get a share of the stake. Troytown was, however, an unlikely runner as his rider lost his irons early in the race and his performance in finishing fourth was a particularly good one. Knight Crusader has been very consistent as a hardier but to be taken largely on trust as a cross-country performer. Dark Game was third last Saturday and has a jumper's chance, but those likely to be prominent at the finish to-morrow are Cloister, Kassai and Troytown. FAIRLIE HANDICAP A field of 14 sprinters is carded for the sprint, and the logical favourite is Bambalina, who was very unlucky last Saturday, being one of the last to leave and finishing with a fine run to get third Vitamin just hung on last Saturday from Fonso, who will meet the winner on 21b better terms. Whitley has the same weight as he carried into fourth place last Saturday, and very little improvement would find him paying a dividend. Lady Christine lost her chance last Saturday by beginning slowly, but she finished strongly, and with a better beginning to-morrow she may reach a place. Triumphal has been working attractively but would probably appreciate a longer journey, and Bambalina may be preferred to Fonso, Vitamin and Lady Christine. TEMUKA HACK HANDICAP With a win and three placings in her last four starts, Watchword looks the pick of the Temuka Hack field, and with 7.13 she should be prominent throughout the running. Zarcon has been a fairly consistent place-gettei* this season, and in this field the Lo Zingaro filly appears to have more than an outside chance of adding to her record. If Terminate runs up to the form he showed in winning the Chatmos Hack Handicap, of one mile and a-quarter, at Ashburton, he will add to the interest in the finish. Other likely sorts are Swift Action and Gleneagles, but Watchword. Zarcon and Terminate may be in most demand. THE TROTTING EVENTS

Good fields, bordering on the unwieldy side, are engaged in the two trotting events, and-, in the Wai-Iti Handicap those likely to be in favour are Blue Signal, Mischievous and Dowry, and in the Winchester Handicap, Fanciful, Pretty Dillon and the Joygiver-Our Flicka bracket may be the favourites. The following are among the form horses;— 11 a.m.: Pukaki Hurdles.—Arctic Circle. Kiloney, Grill. 11.45; Southburn Hack Handicap.—Oronoko, Orthodox, Mr Micawber. 12.30: Wai-Iti Trot.—Blue Signal, Mischievous, Dowry. 1.10; South Canterbury Handicap.—Ned Kelly, Kirkella, Flying Control, 1.55: Craigmore Hack Steeples.—Cloister, Kassai. Troytown. 2.40: Fairlie Handicap.—Bambalina, Fonso, Vitamin. 3.25: Winchester Trot.—Fanciful, Pretty Dillon, Joygiver-Our Flicka bracket. 4.10: Temuka Hack Handicap.—Watchword, Zarcon, Terminate.
