Victoria League Holds Reception On Empire Day
On Tuesday afternoon the Victoria League held an " at home ” in the Concert Chamber in celebration of Empire Day, which is also the anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria. A large replica of the league’s badge was the principal decoration, the front of the stage being massed with bronze chrysanthemums. A large number of members and guests filled the Concert Chamber and listened to an address on “ The True Greatness ’* given by the Rev. K. D. Macßae. The Deputy Mayor, Cr L. M. Wright, introduced the speaker, and others in the official party were the Mayoress, Lady Cameron, Mrs Wright, Miss Macandrew (the secretary), and Mrs Gerald Fitzgerald (the president). Mrs Fitzgerald spoke of the growing membership of the league, which, she said, formed a valuqjjle link in the friendly relationships existing between people at Home and those in New Zealand. The blankets which were to have been presented to the King and Queen during their projected tour of the Dominion had now been completed, with the royal monograms. After being on display in Wellington, they would be despatched to England, where the High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan, would for Ward them to Buckingham Palace.
