RESOURCES OF ANTARCTIC MINERAL DEPOSITS BURIED IRRETRIEVABLY NZPA —Copyright SAN FRANCISCO, May 15. The belief that the frozen continents offer uncounted world resources was ridiculed by Dr Arthur D. Howard, geologist with the United States navy’s 1946 : 47 ' Antarctic expedition, in an address to Stanford University to-day. Dr Howard said the icecap covering such minerals as might exist would take tens of thousands of years to melt. When it did melt, the wat-r would return to the sea,' raising the level over the coastal areas wprld wide. “ Of course, we won’t have to worry about this. It is too far in the future.” Dr Howard said that 5,000,000 square miles of the Atlantic were practically buried under a 5,000 to 10,000-foot ice cap. The known low-grade coal deposits would be unable to compete for centuries with similar deposits elsewhere in the world.
