REGULAR ARMY

RECRUITING DRIVE IN THE SOUTH OVER 50 APPLICATIONS The mobile Army-recruiting Office has returned to the headquarters of the Southern Military' District at Christchurch after a recruiting campaign throughout Otago and Southland. On the southern tour, more than 50 applications were received for entry into the regular army. Most of the applicants were young men who desired to enter one of the trades offered, and the remainder were keen to become instructors in the various departments of the service. “There is no doubt that the good reports received from those who entered Burnham, as a result of the last drive, had influenced a number of these men’s friends to enrol this time,” an officer told the Daily Times. “ The establishment of the Recruit Holding Wing at Burnham has speeded up the procedure of the entry into camp of recruits, and they may go in almost immediately if they so desire. "A Recruit Training Wing has also been established at Burnham, for the first time,” he added, “ and South Island entries will do their basic training at this camp.” Mention was made of the new and improved rate of pay for the women’s service (NZWAC), which was recently announced.

Women between the ages of 18 and 40 are being accepted and they sign up for a period of two years. At the completion of that term they may sign up for a further two years or until they reach the age of 45, if they so desire.
