JIMMY THE ONE WINS

SPOUTING

Hazlett Memorial Steeplechase to New Glade BIRCHWOOD HUNT MEETING Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, May 15. Jimmy the One scored his third success in recent weeks when he won the President’s Handicap, the chief flat event at the Birchwood Hunt meeting at Invercargill yesterday in decisive style. He showed in no uncertain manner his ability to run out a middle distance on heavy ground, and this was his first success beyond a mile. Mr Micawber did not win out of his turn when he beat the hack sprinters narrowly but well in the Kennels Hack Handicap, and Amorlad came into his own over country when he won the Gardner Memorial Steeplechase with a good deal in hand. ,The J. S. Hazlett Memorial Steeplechase, for amateur horsemen, provided an exciting finish with New Glade, who had made practically all the running, scoring a head decision over Regular in a photo finish. After a sharp frost the weather was bright and fine, but the track was in a heavy state.

Douglas Haig was a pronounced favourite for the President’s Handicap, but he was well beaten into third place after having every chance in the running. Super Flight, Great Coon and Rhine Lord were the first to show out and at the mile Super Flight and Great Coon were together clear of Sea Power and Rhine Lord with Jimmy the One two lengths back and Front and Merry Lancer at the head of the others. Super Flight shaded Great Coon down the back and at the half they were followed by Rhine Lord, Sea Power, Merry Lancer, Jimmy the One and Douglas Haig moving up. Super Flight began to give ground at the three, where Rhine Lord and Jimmy the One took over from Douglas Haig and Merry Lancer. At the straight entrance the two leaders ran wide and Douglas Haig came up on the inner four lengths back witji Super Flight and Sea Power following'. In the run home, Jimmy the One soon disposed of Rhine Lord and beat him decisively by a length. Douglas Haig was four lengths * ,-back third with Western Front 15 lengths away founth. .Exciting Finish There was an exciting finish to the-J. S. Hazlett Memorial Steeplechase for amateur riders in which New Glade scored by a narrow margin from Regular iii a,, photo-finish. Irish Pal and New Glade were in front at the stand double with a round to go and at the mile New Glade was three lengths clear of Recharge. who ran off at the next fence, Regular and Boy Friend, who fell at the fence near the five. Regular lost some ground at the second to last fence and at 1 the last fence New Glade was four lengths clear of Regular with Irish Pal 20 lengths back. In the run home, Regular finished particularly well, but. he failed by a head to cgtch New Glade. Irish Pal ..was 100 yards back third and Bonnie Simper, who broke down, a similar distance back fourth. Overdue Success Mr Micawber scored an overdue success in the Kennels Hack Handicap to which a photograph was called to decide the first three placings. Sir Abbot took no part in the race. Racing across the top Gay Prince had charge from Great Bid, Haughty Lyric, Plain Pal, Fonso, Mr Micawber, and Strathaird, ahead of The Turk. Great Bid to<?k charge at the three, and he was first into the straight from Mr Micawber and Fonso, with Gay Prince two lengths back. In 4he run home, Great Bid was tackled by Fonso and Mr Micawber, and there was little between the trio as they crossed the line. Mr Micawber secured the decision by a long neck from Fonso, with Great Bid a nose back third. Strathaird and Night Rider were together three lengths back, with Oscillate next. Relampago in Form Victory Flight tried to win the Hunters’ Flat Handicap all the way, but he tired badly in the run home. - Victory Flight was five lengths clear at the half-mile, where Relampago had run into second place ahead of Recharge and Man s Song. Relampago soon had Victory Flight beaten, and he carried on to win decisively by two lengths from Man’s Song with Victory Flight three lengths back third Recharge and Hunting Charm were next. Solid Performance High Quest gave a taste of her class to beat a big field in the Birchwood Novice Handicap after being last on the journey. At the half Gold Mine was clear of a bunched lot, including MarieRita, The Saint, Sweet Lorraine, Mandeville, and Shelbash. In the next furlong High Quest moved round the outer. Gold Mine was three lengths dear into the straight, with Vermeer Lad, High Quest, Mandeville, Patella, and Paprika within striking distance. High Quest drew up to Gold Mine inside the distance. Gold Mine stuck to his task, but High .Quest gained the upper hand in the last few vards and secured a head decision in .a photo finish. Paprika was four lengths back third, with Melva fourth. Sweet Lorraine, ,Sea Beacon and Patella followed. First Success Over Country Amorlad won his first race over country when he was successful in the Gardner Memorial Steeplechase, in which he had the measure % the leaders a long way from home. Hunting Charm fell at the first fence, and Glengowan, who had been slow away, led along the back from Fairy Bard, Hansel, First Out, and Red Prize in close order. Whakawhatea dropped his rider at the third fence. Hansel led along the back, and at the half-mile they were two lengths clear of Red Prize, Amorlad, under a hold, and a gap to Tamerlane at the head of the others. First Out was beaten at the home turn, where Hansel fell, and at the last fence Amorlad and Red Prize were on terms four lengths clear of First Out and the others well back.
