MEAT FOR EXPORT

„ KILLINGS AT BURNSIDE AS HIGH AS LAST YEAR Present indications are that export meat killings in Otago this season will be as high as last year. Usually, the Burnside freezing works complete the season in the third week of June, and this year may not prove an exception. Much depends on the weather, however, and further growth of green feed in the near future may mean an earlier last-minute rush of late stock to the works. So far, the killing season at Burnside has continued smoothly, and at the moment more stock could be handled than is being received. To date, weights have been, particularly fair, even better than last year, no doubt as a result'of the favourable climatic season and its effect on the growth and quality of feed. Most farmers agree that the prices have been good, and every advantage has been taken of them with the steady stream of stock to the slaughterhouse. Present indications are that this flow will continue although it has slackened somewhat at the moment. „ , „ As in Southland and Canterbury again this year, the Otago works have proved adequate to handle all stock offering. Records will be set in Southland, where an abundance of feed has been available to such an extent that stock from the drier north has been brought south for fattening and finishing off.
