Special to the Dally Times ROXBURGH, May 15. The third series of matohes in the Maniototo district Rugby competition on Saturday was "held in ideal conditions, and the grounds, in the main, were in good order. Strath-Taieri beat Ranfurly in a 1 good game at Ranfurly by 13 points to 5. Followers of the Strath-Taieri side claimed that it was the first time that their club had beaten Ranfurly on its home ground. During the first 30 minutes of the match the Strath-Taieri forwards, who were bigger and heavier, played a fast game, and the Ranfurly pack could not hold them. Their combined forward rushes had Ranfurly on defence for most of the time, and gave them an early lead of 13—nil. The score was made up by tries by Heffernan and P. Tisdale, and a penalty and two conversions by Williams. Ranfurly rallied better in the second spell, and Mulholland opened its scoring with a try following a good forward rush. E. J. Kearney converted. For StrathTaieri O’Connell, Heffernan and James were the best forwards, with Simpson playing best among the backs. Forrester and Graham were the best of the Ranfurly forwards and J. P. Kearney and Mitchell stood out in the back line.

Naseby and Girnmerburn played on a rather heavy ground at Naseby and the going suited the visiting team, who quickly scored nine points. Naseby did not manage to score in the first spell, but it performed better in the second half and scored eight points. . Girnmerburn increased its lead near the finish of the game when it scored again and the try was converted. Other senior results were:—Southern 8, Ida Valley 3; Patearoa defaulted to Becks; Ranfurly beat Patearoa by 16 points to 5 in a junior match. WOMEN’S HOCKEY Naseby 4, Girnmerburn 4; Ranfurly 2, Patearoa 2. GOLF The male members of the Maniototo Golf Club played a medal found in conjunction with the first round of the Black and White Cup competition. The winner was J. McAlley 82—13—69, with A. M McLauchlan 81—7—74, A. J. McLauchlan 98—24—74, Dr Kidd 85—l(L-75, G. G. Henry 88—12—76, X. W. Anderson 91 —15— 76, K. N. Wood 101—24—77. McAlley, the winner of the round, has been playing sound golf during recent weeks and, after a reduction in handicap two weeks ago, he was again reduced on Saturday to 11. A Stableford Bogey Match was played by the women members of the club and the winner was Mrs Gilchrist with a score of 34 points. Other scores were:— Mrs McLean 33, Miss Miller 31, Miss Grant 28, Mrs Macdonald 27, Mrs Templeton 27, Mrs McLauchlan 26. RIFLE SHOOTING The Wedderburn Defence Rifle Club held the first day of its classification shoot on Saturday and the winner was W. Wright with a score of 99. His handicap was six and his off the rifle score 93. Other good scores were: W. Duncan 90 —B—9B.8—98. J. Inder 85—13—98.
