THE EGG SHORTAGE
Sir, —Commercial egg producers some times fail to do all they could because they are not old-fashioned enough. The following additions to a hen’s feed make an immense difference:—Green feed—(a) grown commercially, like kale, which thrives m wet and cold seasons, seeded lettuces; (b) market surpluses, such as tired ” cabbages, turnip tops, cauliflower trimmings—any brassica, onion tops; (c) any of the following common weeds:— dandelion, plantain, hedge mustard (preferred to almost anything), charlock (not so good), goosegrass, etc.; (d) green feed should be generally given raw. but back garden unripe oats added to mash (chop whole plant) are good; (e) sunflower seeds as grown in Central Europe and eaten by the Russians. Many fowls would, if they could, cackle over their monotonous diet.—l am etc, . A. M. G.
