PROPOSED ROADWAY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION’S VIEW The Oamaru Borough Council advised yesterday’s meeting of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association that the question of forming a subsidiary roadway from Humber street north had been discussed, and it had been decided to approach the association tp ascertain if it would be agreeable to make a strip of land at the Show Grounds available for this purpose. The president, Mr J. A. C. McKenzie, reported that several members had inspected the area in question, but none had been enthusiastic about the proposal as the strip cut through the sheep pens as well as the pig and cattle stalls. It also bordered on the ring, which would have 'to be shifted. It was pointed out that if the proposed roadway was formed, cattle being loaded and unloaded on railway trucks would have to cross the road. ” Nobody will use the proposed road in preference to the main highway, as it is not straight, and its design is more like a willow pattern than a road," Mr McKenzie said. " We have not a foot of land to spare, and we will have to fight to retain all we have," he added. Mr R. B. Meek remarked that the proposed roadway had been discussed by the council several years ago, and he considered the main congestion was caused by pupils going to and returning from school on cycles. ft This congestion could be relieved by the formation of a cycle track along the east side of the railway line. * • The secretary, Mr C. C. Gillies, said that the proposed roadway was incorporated in a long-term proposal, and the cotincil was looking towards the future extensions of the borough. After Mr J. Kingan had suggested that the roadway would be better situated along the west side of Thames highway as an extension of Reed street, it was decided to advise the council that tire area was not available.
