FAILURE TO STOP
COLLISION WITH TAXI MOTORIST CONVICTED A collision between a motor car and a taxi outside the Public Hospital at 7.20 p.m. on March 31 last led to the appearance of Robert Greaves before Mr J. D. Willis. S.M., hi the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with failing to stop after an accident, driving without due care and attention, and having no driver's licence. The defendant pleaded guilty to all the charges. Senior Sergeant J. H. Hogg said that the driver of the taxi was leaving the King street entrance of the hospital when the defendant's car veered right across the street and collided with him. The defendant did not stop, but the complainant gave chase and when the defendant was seen m-Cumberland street he denied that he**had been involved in the accident. Two days later, however, he admitted to the North Dunedin police that he was the person involved in the accident. The defendant explained to the court that he had “ heard a knock ” at the time of the accident, but did not know that any serious damage had been done. For failing to stop he was fined £5, with costs (lOs). for driving without a licence £1 with costs (10s) and for driving without due care and attention £3 with costs (10s). Dangerous Driving On a charge.of dangerous driving, Leslie William Houston was fined £5 with costs (10s), and for having no warrant of fitness £1 with costs (10s). The evidence for the police was that the defendant was timed to do 55 miles an hour when travelling along the Anderson's Bay road at 2.30 a.m. on March 19. Other Charges Mitchell Bros. Builders, Ltd. (Mr C. S Stevens), were fined £2 with costs (10s) on a charge of permitting an excessive rear overhang on a motor vehicle, and £1 with costs (10s) for driving a motor vehicle at a speed exceeding 30 miles an hour. Both charges were admitted. Charles Stewart Weir admitted a charge of having no warrant of fitness and was fined 10s with costs (10s).
