BIG DECREASE IN BRITISH EXPORTS FOR LAST MONTH
NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, May 11. British exports during April dropped by £22,500,000 compared with the figures for March, and were the lowest for six months Imports fell by £2,500,000 compared with March, but were higher than in any other month since the war. . The gap between exports and imports was £44,500,000, the largest for 12 months. Although the reduction in exports was partly due to the fact that Easter fell this year in April, it is generally considered that the decreased figures are the first indication of the contracting markets which are now being encountered by British merchants in many parts of the world. The President of the Board of Trade. Mr Harold Wilson, recognised this fact when he said on the eve of his departure for Canada: “April has shown us a lower daily rate of exports and the beginning of some of the difficulties which every exporter in this country knows we ’ have got to face before very long.” \
