“NO MAGINOT LINE”
AMERICAN ARMS PROGRAMME POINT FOR CONGRESS TO STRESS , NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9.10 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 10. Senator Arthur Vandenberg said today that Congress must make at clear that its programme of arms for Europe does not pledge the United States to defend Western Europe’s frontiers With “ a Maginot Line of some sort.” Senator Vandenberg, the Republican foreign policy leader, said that failure to do this would be “to deceive our friends abroad—the last possible crime we should commit.” Senator Vandenberg made his statement in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after Mr James Warburg, former banker, told the committee that the North Atlantic Treaty and arms programme might cost the United States over 10,000,000,000 dollars and require 1,000,000 troops in Western Europe. /
