SMALLPOX IN SYDNEY

AIRLINE STEWARD FROM KARACHI SYDNEY, May 10. An aircraft steward who arrived in Sydney a week ago in the plane which brought the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, and his party back from London is suffering a mild attack of smallpox. The Commonwealth health authorities to-day appealed to all passengers by the plane and all contacts of the patient, who stayed at a Bondi Hotel, to report for vaccination and surveillance. The senior Commonwealth medical officer in Sydney, Dr J. Wyburd, said it was not expected that further outbreaks of the disease would occur, but he added that it was vital that all persons concerned should submit to vaccination and surveillance to prevent further contacts. Mr Chifley and his party were vaccinated before they left England to return to Australia In view of this, it is not considered necessary for them to be quarantined. The steward joined the plane at Karachi.
