FATS RATION

BRITAIN’S ALLOWANCE IMPRESSIONS OF PRIME MINISTER PA WELLINGTON, May 11. “ It would be disastrous for our kinsfolk in Britain if, for any reason, the 9oz fat ration were to be placed in jeopardy at a time when the meat ration has been cut to the lowest level ever reached,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, to-day, when giving his impressions of his recent visit to England. Mr Fraser said that if it were possible to increase the fat ration even by another ounce, this could not fail to have an excellent effect on public health and morale, and a development of this kind was. he was informed, in the forefront of the food objectives for 1950 of nutritional experts in the United Kingdom. If Europe continued to enjoy good weather, and butter rationing continued in New Zealand, Australia and Denmark at the present levels—namely, 6oz a week in New Zealand and Australia and 2oz a week in Denmark—then, Mr Fraser said, there was some hope that for a short period in 1949. as for eight weeks last year when the margarine was reduced, the butter ration might again, perhaps, be increased. “ I know,” said Mr Fraser, “ that the efforts that the farmers have made to increase production and the willingness of the New Zealand people to continue rationing, do afford much necessary assistance to the ">eople of Britain. I am sure I reflect the opinion of the people of New Zealand when I say that they are most willing and, indeed, anxious to have butter rationing continued in the knowledge, which I am able to confirm, that the people of Britain do receive a definite and substantial benefit as a result.”
