FINES FOR BOOKMAKING
PA GISBORNE, May 11. James Grant, a hairdresser and tobacconist. and Thomas Melville, an engineer, pleaded guiltv in the Police Court to-day to carrying on the business of bookmaking, and were fined £SO and £35 respectively by the magistrate, Mr E. L. Wilson
An 181 b trout caught in tire Opihi River recently must have been the heaviest brown trout landed for many years, reported the curator-ranger. Mr F. W. Grayburn, at a recent meeting of the council of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society.
