Smart Hacks Will Meet at Invercargill

The Kennels Hack Handicap at the Birchwood Hunt meeting on Saturday has drawn one of the strongest fields of the day, and betting will probably cover a wide range. Recent winners in Great Bid. Fonso, Bayboa, Gay Prince, Billy Mac, and Weldrest are engaged, and place-getters in Mr Micawber Air Chief, The Turk, Oscillate, Night Rider, and Strathaird will add interest. Mr Micawber has been a model of consistency this season, and he would only need a good passage to be one of the hardest to beat. Great Bid won his division of the Novice Stakes at Invercargill on ) Saturday so convincingly that he can be expected to give a good account of himself. Fonso does not always race as generously as he did on Saturday, but if he is caught in the right mood he is likely to win again. Gay Prince and Bayboa are both possibilities, and if Oscillate does not drift too far in the early stages of the race she should earn some.of the stake money. The Turk has not hid much luck this season, but he is a likely candidate. Night Rider has some good placings to his credit, and he is dtie for a winning turn. The same can be said for- Billy. Mac, while Weldrest will be well suited bv the track, which will again be easy. Mr Micawber, Great Bid, and Fonso are a trio with bright prospects. »

Spell for Balkis r Balkis finished her racing as a three-year-old on Saturday, and she has been turned out for a spell for a few months. J. S. Shaw’s Team A couple of two-year-old geldings have joined J. S. Shaw’s team at Riccarton. A half-brother to Demonic is by Airway from Gay Helen, by Iliad—Praise. He will be: rdced by Mr A. Louisson, his breeder. The other is by Tweed ll—La Bru, by Beau Pere—Maiidane, and Mr W. Twomey will race him. The two newcomers were broken in some time ago, arid now they are ready to start serious training. Disturbance Eased Up Disturbance was galloped on soon after the start of the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. One of her legs showed evidence of the trouble next day, but .it is not serious. She has started on an easy time for a few months, as it is not intended to race her again until the Grand National meeting iirAugust. Debut in Open Company , / ■/: Rhine . Lord will be making his first appearance in. open company when he parades in the Handicap at the Birchwood Hunt meeting at Invercargill on Saturday. The half-brother to Royal Lancer has always looked as though he would make a good stayer, and. as he will probably be ridden by W. F. Ellis, he must be conceded a chance with 7.0. Sally Gazelle, winner of three races at the Beaumont meeting at Easter, will probably make her first appearance in open company at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting later this month. She has been nominated for the middledistance events on both days. May Race as Hurdler Sir Garnish may make his first attempt over hurdles at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on May 21. The New Zealand Cup winner has been a failure on the flat during the past few months. He is reported ot have schooled well, and his stamina will be a great advantage to him. He is a light-framed horse, however, iand he may not be up to much weight. Hurdles Prospect Corineus will be making his second attempt to win the Waikato Hurdles when he parades on Saturday. He was successful in the race last year with 9.3, defeating Foxstar, Ernada, and Race Chum. Corineus is weighted at 11.5 this year, but he can still be expected to race well. Last year Brookby Song ran unplaced with 11.4, and this year he has 11.1. Corineus is one of the most promising hurdlers in the country, and l»e should pay his way this year.

Te Rapa Prospect Mr E. R. Curtis, who had the misfortune to lose Boolamskee after he had crashed through the wing of a schooling hurdle at Te Rapa on Tuesday, will be represented by Detract in the Te Rapa Plate, a race for amateur riders over one mile on the first day of the Waikato meeting. Mr Curtis will ride Detract, who will carry top weight. 11.7, in the first division of the race. 'Detract finished third to Attractive Air and Competitive in the Gimcrack Hack Handicap on the third day of the Great Autumn meeting. On the strength of this placing. Detract is 'entitled to be one of the favouirtes for his race on Saturday
