Dark Arrow Was Among Last Season’s Consistent Gallopers

SPORTING

* Among the South Island horses engaged at the Waikato meeting on Saturday is Dark Arrow, who will contest the Hamilton Handicap of one mile and a-quarter, and it is reported that he is in fine condition for his northern campaign; in fact, he has never looked better. He resumed racing at the Banks Peninsula meeting in March after a lengthy spell. The Nightly five-year-old has shown his best form on heavy tracks and he was one of last season’s most consistent performers, with no fewer than 13 wins and seven placings in 29 starts. He was unplaced in his first race of the season and then won five in a row. At the Dundin winter meeting he won the principal race each day—the Birthday Handicap with 8.6, the Provincial Handicap with 9.1, and the King George Handicap with 9.10. Trained by C. G. Humphries at Riccarton, Dark Arrow is from Mataa, and with 7.11 he should be prominent on Saturday, particularly if the conditions suit him. Humphries will also take Minion, a hack hurdler, with him. On the first day of the Ashburton meeting Minion ran second in the Longbeach Hurdle , Handicap, being a length away from Periwig. Minion is a five-year-old gelding by Lang Bian from Hine Maurea, by Arausio from Te Aupaki, by Merry Moment from Timua. by Birkenhead, and he appfeals as an early winner over hurdles.
