RANGE OF PRICES

The following quotations per 1001 b for beef and per lb for mutton and pigs are supplied, with a comparison with last week's prices, by our special representative at yesterday’s Burnside stock sale: —

mainly of only ordinary class. Young ewes had a keen inquiry, while’ ewes which comprised the bulk of the yarding also met with a firm sale. , ' . The offering of store cattle had little oi any quality, the yarding being mostly a mixed one. The demand was slack, and anything low of condition had a very poor inquiry. Runners and vealers, of which there was also a fairly good yarding, showed little alteration from last week’s prices. Although the yarding of baconers was not a large one, prices did not compare with those of the previous week, the values being 7s to 8s a head lower. Porkers, as in previous sales, met with spirited competition. There was little demand for store pigs and only small yardings are coming to hand. FAT CATTLE With the short yarding' of fat cattle to hand, and poorer quality, prices for the better class beef were well ahead of last week’s, although all classes shared in the appreciation. Quotations: Prime bullocks, from £23 12s 6d to £26 7s 6d; medium £2l 12s 6d to £22 17s 6d; light, from £lB 17s 6d; prime heifers, £ls 7s 6d to £l7 17s 6d; medium, £l2 17s 6d to £l3 17s 6d; light, from £ll 12s 6d; prime cows, £l3 7s 6d to £l6 7s 6d; medium, £ll 2s 6d to £l2 7s 6d; light, from £8 12s 6d. FAT SHEEP It was rather a poor display of fat sheep, with a short entry of wethers. All classes had good competition, prices being well ahead of those at recent sales. Quotations:—Best quality wethers, to 70s: prime. 58s to 655; medium. 49s to 525; light, from -455; prime young ewes, to 495; prime heavy ewes, to 39s 6d; prime, 34s to 375; medium, 30s to 32s* light, from 265. The number of sheep yarded was 1600. _ , , , • . FAT LAMBS 7 T'‘ The offering of fat lambs, numbered approximately 700, and there were several consignments of good quality, including one of extra special quality. These were offered on account of Mr R. Burgess, Highcliff, and realised from 55s to 63s Gd, the greater portion being over 60s. This was one of the finest consignments of lambs seen at Burnside for many years, and probably the prices realised were the highest. Quotations: —Extra prime heavy lambs, to 63s 6d; prime heavy, 54s to 565; prime, 47s to 51s; medium. 40s to 435; light, from 345. STORE CATTLE

Little interest was taken in the sale of store cattle, and the recent bad weather, no doubt had the effect of-a check on feed, so that most of those present were not buyers. Aged cattle, particularly cows, had an indifferent demand, and sold at low values. One pen of three to three and a-half-year-old steers made £l3, and two pens of two to two and a-lialf-year-olds made £ll to £ll 7s. One pen of breeding cows realised £6 12s, with a number of low-condi-tioned cows making from £2 to £3 10s. Best-quality runners idealised from £9 15s to £ll 12s; best vealers. £6 5s to £7 ss; medium, £4 15s to £5 2s; small and light, from £3 15s. FAT PIGS

The yarding of both baconers and porkers was about the same as at recent sales, but the trade was operating cautiously, with the result that baconers were back in values from last week. Porkers, however, were again in good demand, and were fully up to late values. Extra-quality baconers sold to £8; prime, £7 4s to £7 12s; medium, £6 8s to £6 14s; light, from £6 4s; best porkers, £5 16 s to £6 6s; medium, £4 18s to £5; -light, from £4.
