MANY REMITS
ASSOCIATED CHAMBERS PA AUCKLAND, May 11. Remits dealing with widely divergent subjects were carried at to-night’s session of the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. One remit asked the Government to provide for all proposed legislation to be preceded in each case by the publication of an explanation in adequate time before the appearance of the Bill itself. This was because there was at present inadequate notice and insufficient time to consider pending legislation and make representations about it. The conference also adopted a resolution asking that the Government should preface its analysis of the public accounts with a brief summary and balanced statements of total receipts and expenditure showing classified sources of receipts and channels of expenditure for all accounts combined. Another remit deplored the economic waste by the compulsory retirement of men in the Public Service at an age when they were relatively young mentally and ‘ physically, • and recommended optional extension of up to five years while the present labour shortage lasts. The conference also adopted a recommendation that an independent board of trade should be established with advisory, judicial and appellate functions to recommend to Parliament on Customs tariffs and the selection and licensing of imports under import control.
