NYLON STOCKINGS

Sir, —your correspondent, “ Essential Goods First,” goes sadly oil the rails in. her self-imposed task of enlightening " More Nylons,” since she is obviously quite unqualified for that task. In her " let me explain ” paragraph she states that a shopkeeper is granted "an import licence ” with which he may import what he wishes. Let me explain to “E. G. F.” that this is very incorrect. Actually, the shopkeeper is granted ” import licences ” —separate licences for each class of goods he wishes to import. As a fair example, nylon hose may be imported on a nylon hose licence only, and as a matter, of interest, no such licences have yet been granted for the year 1949.

Neither is “E. G. F.” entirely correct when she states that the shopkeeper makes the sole choice of what he imports. His choice is largely governed by what is offering in the country of origin (usually England), ahd baby flannel is one commodity which until recently had not been offered very frequently, although I venture to say that all that has been offered has been accepted. Perhaps if " E. G. F.” was a little older and had personal experience in these matters, she would know that there has been no shortage of baby flannel for some months now. Neither can I agree with “ E. G. F.” in her suggestion that a large number of young ladies should delve into these matters, and fortunately for the future of this country, the majority of young ladies of to-day have sufficient intelligence to become acquainted with essential facts before they rush into criticism of matters they do not fully understand, let alone appointing themselves as experts.—X am, etc., Essential-Facts First.
