RECORD SPEED

MODEL ' AEROPLANES MEETINGS CONCLUDED Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, Apl. 18. The first post-war South Island model aeroplane championships were concluded at Oamaru to-day under ideal flying conditions. A large crowd again watched the events with interest.

The most interesting event of the day was the exhibition flight arranged by A. Williams (Dunedin), whose B class speed model registered an unofficial time of 112.2 miles an hour. The New Zealand record for this section is 110.8 miles an hour, while 163.2 miles an hour is the world's record for a similar machine. Only one timekeeper was on the ground, and Williams, therefore, cannot claim a New Zealand .record. Williams's model is powered by a McCoy 49 engine developing 0.95 horse-power at 14,000 revolutions per minute. The results of to-day’s events were: Class B Speed.—A. Williams (Dunedin), B.47sec, 79.9 miles an hour, 1; M. McCrorie (Palmerston North), 12 2-ssec. 2; J. Hanlon (Dunedin). 15 2-ssec, 3. Gotch Control Line Precision Flying.—W. E. McDonald (Dunedin). 95 points, 1: E. Harris (Dunedin) and M. McCrorie •'Palmerston North), 94 points, equal, 2.

Aerobatics.—C. Colson (Dunedin) 1, K. J. Kidd (Christchurch) 2, J. Hanlon (Dunedin) 3.

Class A Speed.—M. McCrorie (Palmerston North). 13 l-ssec. 1; J. Hanlon (Dunedin) and A. Kotoul (Christchurch), 15 2-ssec (equal), 2. Endeavours were made at a meeting held during the week-end to form a South Island model aeroplane association, but several clubs represented expressed the opinion that they were too busy with their own affairs, and it was decided to take no action in the meantime.

The Christchurch Club advised that it had made a claim to hold the national model aeroplane championships at Christchurch in 1951. The clubs present decided to support the Christchurch claim.
