FIRE BRIGADES

.Trophies Presented Representatives and firemen from the majority of brigades in the southern districts were present at a social on Saturday night, when the trophies won at the demonstrations on Saturday were presented. Mr T. Herron (Oamaru) was in the chair and welcomed the visitors. Mr C. Coxali, Rcefton, president of the United -Fire Bigadcs' Associaton, spoke on the need of both permanent and volunteer firemen. 1-Ie added that permanent men were necessary in the cities, but in town and country areas the volunteer system should function. Mr 11. Stirling-Butcher (inspector of fire' brigades! stated that the ideal way to train small brigades to reach h standard of efficiency was by demonstrations such as that held on Saturday. He added that it was pleasing to see larger entries and new brigades in the competitions. Volunteers had to be trained and it was hoped that a training school would be established. Mr A. Hall (Knitangata) complimented the Oamaru members on the work which they had done for tire demonstrations. Superintendent Morrison thanked the officials lor the way they had carried out their duties, and said it was pleasing to note that there had been no protests received throughout the whole demonstration. The trophies presented by Mr Coxali to O.amaru A, captained by Mr C. Nightingale, were:—Aggregate Shield, Coulson Memorial Shield, Tapley Cup, and a medal for each member of the team Palmerston was also presented with the trophy which was contested for among the smaller brigades, and Gore received the Association Shield for being runnerup in the championship. Yesterday morning approximately 50 firemen attended the church parade at St. Paul’s Church, marching with the Oamaru Garrison Band from the Fire Station up Thames street.
