UNION’S DOUBLE LOSS Special to the Daily Times TIMARU, Apl. 17. Rugby of a surprisingly high standard for so early in the season was seen at Fraser Park on Saturday when Linwood (Christchurch), Union (Dunedin), and Zingari (Timaru) senior teams met in a triangular tournament for the McLauchlan Cup. Two matches were played. Linwood and Zingari each having a win over Union, and they will contest the final on Monday. In the first match against Linwood, Union deserved to win, for the team did most of the attacking, and were rarely out of their opponents’ territory. It was the mobility of the light Linwood forwards, who were ’ able to seize openings quickly, which gave the Christchurch team the victory by 13 points to (i. A. Wright, McCorrie, and Looker were the best of the Union pack, with W. Trevathan standing out as a resourceful back. H. Rowley scored and L. R. Eke kicked a field goal for Union. Union showed that it was capable of fast, constructive Rugby in the afternoon match against Zingari. The Timaru team won by 9 points to 6. but the result was in doubt until the last few minutes of the match. Zingari hooked the ball from the majority of the set scrums, enabling the home backs to stage a number of spectacular movements which were only stopped by resolute tackling. The match ended: Zingari 9. Union 6.
