FIRE BRIGADES
SHIELD TO OAMARU GORE RUNNER-UP Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, Apl. 17. The high standard of efficiency maintained by volunteer fire brigades throughout the' Dominion was demonstrated at Oamaru on Saturday when the. Southern Districts Fire Brigades’ Association’s demonstrations were held at Takaro Park. Although many of these brigades work under a decided handicap because of the lack of sufficient equipment for both training and service work, the high standard throughout the demonstration proved that much time and effort had been spent in training. Over 100 firemen representing the Alexandra, Balclutha, Clyde, Gore, Kaitangata, Kurow, Milton, Oamaru and Palmerston Brigades took part, and altogether 22 teams competed. The Clyde, Kurow and Palmerston Brigades made their first appearances in district demonstrations and performed reasonably well. Years ago the Southern Districts Association was considered to be one of the strongest competitive sub-associations in the Dominion, no fewer than five of its brigades being in the running for the New Zealand championship. The entries at Saturday’s demonstration were the best since the end of the war and it appeared that competitive work was on the up grade within the associations ranks. Milton and Mosgiel Brigades tied for the championship shield at the demonstrations held at Mosgiel in 1947, but in the demonstrations on Saturday Milton was placed third with 68 points and Mosgiel failed to start. The Oamaru Brigade won the shield convincingly with 111 points, while Gore secured second place with 73 points to win the Association Cup. Milton gained 68 points to be third, followed by Balclutha 46 points, Palmerston 4, Alexandra, Kurow and Clyde nil. The hand lamp, which was competed for between the Kurow, Clyde, Palmerston and Alexandra Brigades, was won by Palmerston.
