FEW SURPRISES

CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY SOUTH ISLAND FIXTURE PA CHRISTCHURCH, Apl. 71. There were few surprises on the first day of the South Island tennis championships/ which opened at Wilding Park on Saturday. All seeded players in the Men’s Singles won their matches, but O. M. Bold, the leading Hutt Valley player, was fully extended in the first set of each of his second and third-round matches against A. K. Neave (Christchurch). He was trailing o—s in the first set, but then won 11 games in a row. Against the hard-hitting T. A. F. Withers (Christchurch), he was down o—3 and 2—5 in the first set, but again ’found his best form to win the set and the match. The only upset in the Women’s Singles was the defeat of Miss P. Longton, the third Hutt Valley player, by Miss H. E. Henderson (North Canterbury). For a player with so little experience, Miss Henderson showed remarkable control and tenacity.
