ST. BRUNO WILL BE SUITED BY RIVERTON TRACK

Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL. Apl. 15.

Neither Sea Flower, who has been withdrawn, nor Full Play will be starters in the Riverton Cup, the chief event on the opening clay of the Riverton Racing Club’s annual Easter meeting, which opens tomorrow. Sea Flower has been under treatment for a pricked foot, and Full Play left yesterday on the first stages of his trip to Riccarton, where he is to contest the Great Easter Handicap at the CJC meeting on Monday.

F. W. Ellis will decide to-morrow whether he* will start Excellency, Salmon Spear and Eriskay in the Cup race. It is unlikely that Excellency will be produced. Spare Part is an unlikely starter.

St. Bruno has firmed in favour in the Riverton Cup market as the track conditions have deteriorated, and he promises to be a sound first choice. The Salmagundi three-year-old is not a good track worker, and in his recent work his stablemate, Some Sal, who does not always reproduce her track work, has finished ahead of him. Yesterday St Bruno hit out well, and no fault can be found with his condition. Super Flight has shown in her latest work that she is partial to heavy ground, and there is a strong body of opinion disposed to her chance

A. E. Didham said yesterday that a rider had not been engaged for Night Rider, but, with Sea Flower out, J. M. Cappie may get the mount. Both Whakawhatea and Waihopi will contest the Great Western Steeplechase in preference to the Waiau Steeplechase. Tamerlane may not fulfil his Great Western engagement, as he was injured on the float when being brought to Riverton. H. A. Anderton intends starting his three candidates (Pages Raid, Phil Boa and Siglow). Faites vos Jeux and Sea Venture hold their places as the early favourites for the Aparima Handicap. In his work yesterday morning Faites vos Jeux was not troubled by the going, and he is in firstclass order. The Hob is an unlikely starter. Duvaals revelled in the track conditions yesterday, and he promises to make a forward showing. Foxchase and Sal’s Pal are doubtful runners in the Pourakino Handicap. The track is likely to be well stirred up by this stage, and two out-and-out mudlarks in Douglas Haig and Finigin will prove hard to beat. Finigin has handled the heavy going in great style during the week. The three-year-olds, Mount Barker and Baygundi, will be making their first appearance in open company, and they promise to add interest. Surd will not be a starter in the Longwood Handicap, as she has been withdrawn from all engagements at the meeting.

There was little in the way of final trials at either Invercargill or Riverton yesterday, when the track and weather conditions were impossible at Riverton. There was some schooling over the steeplechase course. Irish Pal giving a good display on his own, and Recharge and First Out being responsible for a good round. The going was very heavy. Additional riding engagements include: —S. G. Shaw, Phantom Night, Page's Raid; J. W. Dooley—Royal Lark, Duvaals, Gold Song; H. W. Skinner, The Denbigh; A. N. Didham—Young Bob, Bata], Special Flight. Subtraction. Oscillate; B. S. Wilson —Bragden, Spiro, Waihopi; D. Dawson, French Glider, Phil Boa; N. H. Ellis, Quadrille, Good Form. Riders engaged for the Riverton Cup arfd Great Western Steeplechase have been named as follows: RIVERTON CUP Excellency, W. F. Ellis; Spare Part, R. J. Mackie; Sir Garnish, W. D. Skelton: Eriskay, D. L. Tressider; Salmon Spear, N. A. Crombie; St. Bruno, C. T. Wilson, Super Flight, L. W. Hare; Jan, C. M. Cassidy; The Denbigh, H. W. Skinner, Defendant; E. G. Low, Batal; A. N. Didham: Perusha, J. B Mennell GREAT WESTERN Page’s Raid, S. G. Shaw; Lisheen, W. Hillis; Waihopi, B. S. Wilson; Eleanor Star, B. J. Mears; Phil Boa, D. Dawson; Night Prince, P. Corboy; .Siglow, M. Milne: San Quentin, F. J. Langford; Tamerlane, A Cousins; Irish Pal, Mr A. Langford; Whakawhatea, —. After almost a week of boisterous weather with heavy rain and hail showers and some snow in several districts the prospects have been far from bright for the Riverton meeting. There were signs of improvement to-day, however, but the tracks are in a sodden state and the going will be very heavy. Form horses include:—
