Technical School Additions
The Rev. A. Marshall was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki High School Board of Governors on Thursday afternoon, and there were also present Mrs M. E. Berry, Messrs C. F. Ridgen, D. S. Bain and H. D. Meldrum. A letter was received from the Education Department approving the present classes at the Technical School and in addition, two pharmacy classes, for which Mr H. O. Walker was appointed master.
Grants of £lll 9s for woodwork equipment and £lßl 5s Gd for metal work equipment at the boys' school were received from the department. A further grant of £SB 10s was received for cleaning and varnishing of desks at the girls' school. The department advised that a grant of £SO for music and £lO for social studies would also be available for both schools. Plans and estimates for a room to be built on the north side of the existing gymnasium at the boys' school w’ere discussed.—Mr J. T. Burrows (rector) stated that a full-time physical culture master was being employed and there was a need for such a room in which to store the equipment. The matter was referred to the department. A further discussion was held on the proposed residence for house masters at the boys’ school and ithe Finance Committee was instructed 'to submit plans to the board for further consideration. Miss C. H. Edgar tendered her resignation as art mistress at the boys' and girls’ schools. It was decided to write to Miss Edgar thanking her for her faithful services to both schools over the past 22 years.
It was decided to hold future meetings of the board on the second Tuesday in each month at 7 p.m. The rector (Mr J. T. Burrows) reported that an efficient programme had been carried out while the boys were in camp at Burnham, and their marching and drill had greatly improved. He also added that 400 visitors had made a visit to the camp on the Sunday. The lady principal (Miss J. B. Wilson) in her report stated that the girls had contributed £lO towards the CORSO appeal. The school tennis championships had been held, with a high standard of play. An inter-school match- bad also been played against Waimate District High Bchool and resulted in a win for Waifaki. Several pupils had entered the Otago lawn tennis junior championships, and Barbara McEwan had been successful in winning the Singles title.
