DAIRY HERDS
SUCCESSEDL DISPERSAL SALES UP TO £4O FOR COWS During the week two highly successful clearing sales of dairy herds took place near Dunedin. On Monday, Mr J. L. Cross, of Portobello, held a dispersal sale of his high-grade dairy herd and prices realised were very satisfactory from the vendor’s point of view. Top price for a cow at profit was £4O, and a heifer realised £34 10s. Cows In milk and due to calve in the spring realised to £26, and the average price for the 28 head submitted to auction was £27 15s.
On Thursday, Mr N. Creighton, of Henley, disposed of his herd. Buyers were present from Southland, Central Otago and South Canterbury, and the sale was an excellent one. The cows at profit and due in May and June met with spirited competition, and sold at up to £34 10s. Very few of the winter caivers brought under £27. The spring caivers also met with a ready market, selling at from £l3 to £22. Dairy heifers, factory caivers. realised from £lO to £l4 10s. Both these dairy farmers were supplying the city with milk, but their herds will not be lost entirely to Dunedin consumers. Most of the cows sold will be going into other herds supplying the city.
