SAIEDA IS EARLY FAVOURITE FOR WAIMATE

As a result of bis good performance in running third in the Gardiner Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday, Saieda is the early favourite for the Waimate Cup, in which he has 7.10, or 101 b more than he carried on Saturday, but—the field is not nearly so strong. The only horse in the Gardiner Memorial Handicap who will meet him again at Waimate is Bren Gun, who comes in on lib better terms. In the Oamaru Cup Saieda did not finish on, but on Satuiday he ran the distance right out. and. judged on that form, he should be prominent in the Waimatc Cup. Jottings Acceptances for the Waimate Racing Club's meeting on Saturday clqse to-day. Acceptances for the Otautau Racing Chib’s meeting on April 9 close on Thursday. Waimate Prospect If Indiana reproduces the form he showed at Oamaru he will be a hard horse to beat in the Trial Plate at Waimate on Saturday. Airway Filly Air Sonnet galloped two good races at Oamaru and the Airway filly is not likely to be in maiden company very much longer. A Strong Hand The field for the President’s Handicap, the sprint at Waimate, contains three Wingatui gallopers in Faites vos Jeux, Dnvaals and Bonny Royal, and between them they should get a share of the stake. Heavy Support The Salmagundi filly, All Alone, came in for heavy support in the Farewell Hack Handicap at Oamaru and finished second to Paper View. Her performance left the impression that she will be a very fit horse for her Easter engagements. Returning to Form Improved by his race on the first day, Prize Ring ran much more prominently at Oamaru on Saturday, and the Ringmaster gelding is rapidly approaching something like his best form A Good Effort Salmon King paid nearly double figures for a place In the Waitaki Handicap and his third placing was a good effort. He has been nominated for the CJC meeting at Easter, and as the result of his race at Oamaru he should be a fit horse. In Unlucky Groove Sweet Lorraine is still galloping in an unlucky groove and has yet to leave the, novice ranks. If she could be smartened up over the first couple of furlongs in her races she would not be long in winning a race. She came from weil back to get third on Saturday. Totalisator at Oamaru The balancing of the totalisator at Oamaru was good, but more frequent “ readings ” would no doubt have been appreciated by the public. The figures against some horses' names made a surprising jump from one " read ” to another. Looked Well Bowling Green looked particularly well when she went out for the Waitaki Handicap, but her army of supporters did not get a run for their money, as she was badly left from the outside position. The Probation filly may make amends very soon. Russia’s Stake Earnings Russia's win in the Carbine Plate at Flemington recently brought his earnings to £37,400, and he is the biggest stake winner still racing in Australia. He is in eighth place in the list of stake winners at any time, his latest win carrying him past High Caste. Windbag and Elirythmic. A Popular Win Although Paper View's dividend approached a score, the Paper Slipper gelding’s win in the Farewell Handicap at Oamaru was a popular one. as he has been racing very consistently, having scored two wins and five placings in his seven most recent races. He may do his Easter racing at Riccarton.
