Waterside Workers Oppose Conscription In Series of Remits

Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON, Mar. 27. Conscription for national service is likely to prove one of the major topics for the Labour Party and Federation of Labour conferences in Wellington in May. The New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union has entered a whole series of remits for the annual conference of the Federation of Labour declaring opposition to conscription. In one of these, it proposes that if compulsory military training is introduced, the Federation of Labour should calf upon all its affiliations to organise, and to elect a Government which will uphold the principles and traditions of the Labour and Trade Union movement.

The union also proposed that the federation should oppose conscription in time of peace, whether introduced by referendum or by any other “supposed democratic way.” The New Zealand Engineering Workers’ Union also proposes that the federation declare itself against conscription in peace-time.
