BASKETBALL RULES
IMPROVEMENTS TO BE INTRODUCED PA -WELLINGTON, Mar. 25. Improvements to the rules of basketball decided upon by the combined meeting of Australian and New Zealand officials last year will be introduced this season, states the New Zealand Basketball Association. An easing up on the footwork rule and more freedom for initiative by defence layers are the chief changes to be introduced, and, together with the elimination of unnecessary whistling, are aimed at speeding up play. The association says an interpretation of the stepping rule in force in New Zealand since 1945 made New Zealand footwork rigid in comparison with the freedom of movement enjoyed by the Australians under the original rule. Players throughout New Zealand, it is stated, will welcome the reversion to the original rule. “ Obstruction," which includes the old " blocking,” will be interpreted more widely to advantage of defence players.
