McGLASHAN COLLEGE

BOARD OF GOVERNORS A meeting of the John McGlashan College Board of Governors was attended by Messrs A. C. Cameron (in the chair), C. C. Gray T. C. Ross, A. R. Harris, W. S. Gilkison, J. P. Cook, R. D. B. Paterson, N. R. Macalister, and J. F. Ross, the Rev. J. J. Cairney, and Dr A. Borrie. The resignation of the Rev. H. J. Ryburn from the board was accepted with regret. The chairman referred to Mr Ryburn’s service as a member of the board and his untiring interest in the welfare of the college. The board accepted with thanks the presentation of a set of bagpipes by Mrs W. A. Blackwood. The principal, Mr J. Conolly, reported that the pupils of Form 1 upwards had been tested by members of the Vocational Guidance Department for colour vision. This had been carried out because many vocations would not accept boys who had defective colour vision. A full inspection of the Secondary Department had been carried out, and the inspectors had expressed satisfaction with the progress made. The board congratulated all those responsible for the success of the sports day. Mr Conolly reported that an interesting and amusing talk on his work as Toe H representative by Mr Shaw, of Northern Ireland, was greatly enjoyed by the pupils. It was reported that a full holiday had been granted an Anniversary Day. The board approved of the suggestion that a service should be held in the college hall at 7.30 p.m. on Anzac Day, and an invitation was extended to old collegians, parents and friends to attend. It was hoped that the photographs of the old collegians who had lost their lives overseas would be ready in time to be unveiled at that service.

Salary increases recommended by the Finance and Education Committees were approved, and the board’s policy of paying State salaries to its teachers were reaffirmed. Mr Cameron extended to the secretary, Mrs D. J Thompson, the board’s good wishes on her engagement to be married, and expressed the board's appreciation of her services and its regret that she w'ould be leaving later in the year.
