SHIP DESERTER

REMANDED ON THEFT CHARGE PA AUCKLAND, Mar. 25. Arrested at Hastings on Tuesday, Douglas Stanley Mowatt, aged 29, a steward, was charged in the Police Court to-day with deserting from the Hororata on February 27. He was further charged that, as steward in charge of the ship, lie stole sums totalling £7lB 14s 6d. Mowatt pleaded guilty to the desertion charge. A representative of the New Zealand Shipping Company said that Mowatt signed on in Britain for two years. He was absent when the ship left Auckland. Mowatt was fined £lO. On the charge of theft, he was remanded until Thursday, bail being allowed in the sum of £2OO and a surety of a like amount. He was ordered to report daily to the police.
