TRADE CERTIFICATION

NEW BOARD ESTABLISHED MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 25. The Minister of Education, Mr McCombs, announced to-day the appointments to membership of the Trades Certificates Board. In December, 1948, the Minister appointed as chairman of the board Mr E. Caradus, formerly chief inspector of postprimary schools and director of the educational services of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The terms of the Act establishing the board and defining its constitution have resulted in the following further appointments:—Recommended by the Director of Education: Mr G. V. Wild, chief inspector of post-primary schools, and Mr R. Hynes, senior inspector of technical schools. Nominated by the New' Zealand Employers’ Federation, Mr C. G. Camp, managing secretary of the federation, and Mr J. R. Hanlon, assistant secretary of the federation. Nominated by the New Zealand " deration of Labour: Mr J. H. Thompson, secretary of the New' Zealand Plumbers’ Union, and Mr P. E. Warner, secretary of the Wellington Trades Council. Nominated by the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association, Mr J. Davidson, Technical College, Dunedin, and Mr A. J. R. Warren, Technical College. Christchurch. Nominated by the Technical Education Association: Mr C. H. Sayers, principal of the Palmerston North Technical College, and the commissioner of apprenticeship (Mr H. C. McQueen). Nominated by the New Zealand Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Board: Mr C. C. Kemvard, registrar of the Wiremen’s Board. Nominated by the New Zealand Motor Trade Certification Board: Mr F. A, Knight, secretary of the Motor Trade Certification Board. Nominated by the Plumbers’ Board of New Zealand: Mr H. H. Martindale, chairman of the Plumbers’ Board.

The Minister said it was possible for additions to be made on the board’s recommendation by nomination from any other authority conducting examinations and issuing certificates for the whole of New Zealand in connection with a particular trade or trades. The establishment of the board and the consequent future opportunities of improving and co-ordinating apprenticeship standards throughout the country followed closely on the recommendations of the Consultative Committee appointed by the Minister of Education in November, 1946. to reoort on trades examinations.
