UNIVERSITY SWIMMING

CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL FAST TIMES RECORDED Keen racing and last times combined to make the championship carnival held by the Otago University Amateur Swimming Club at the Municipal Baths last night one of the most successful for many years. The friendly rivalry evinced by the supporters of the various relay teams, who encouraged their representatives with vociferous hakas, and the presence of the Capping Band gave added atmosphere to the proceedings. T. H. Logan, the New Zealand men's 100 yards medley and 100 yards butterfly champion, was the outstanding performer, winning the 100 Yards Freestyle title in 58sec, the 100 Yards Breaststroke in 77 2-ssec, and the 50 Yards Invitation Butterfly in 31 3-ssec. Logan had a great duel with W. J. Jarvis in the 100 Yards Freestyle, and held off Jarvis's determined challenge by half a yard. Their battle was repeated in the 100 Yards Breaststroke, in which inches separated the pair. W. J. Jarvis, however, succeeded in winning of the 100 Yards Backstroke Championship in lmin 17sec. S. W Jarvis returned the fast time of 26 4-ssec to win the 50 Yards Freestyle. The times in the women’s events were not outstanding, but some good racing was provided, the most promising competitors being' Misses L. Burch, M. McKenzie and C. Black.

.The New Zealand women’s diving champion, Miss B. Moore, was in a class of her own in the Women’s Plain Scratch Dive, and J. Fitzgerald, who won the men’s event, performed well. The latter’s exhibition of burlesque diving was one of the best seen locally for some time.

A University troupe presented a welistaged and entertaining life-saving burlesque, and further interest was given to the programme by a water polo match between an Otago team and the University team, Otago winning by 7 goals to 2. W. A. Williams scored four goals for the winners, and C. N. Williams three, while S W. Jarvis and W. J. Jarvis each scored for University. In a special attempt to establish a New Zealand women’s record for 150 yards backstroke, Miss Jean Stewart, of the Kiwi Club, swam brilliantly to return the fast time of lmin 52 4-ssec. Application will be made for recognition of the pei’formance as a record. John Jarvis, also of the Kiwi Club, failed only by 4-ssee to equal the New Zealand under 14 boys’ record of 53sec for 75 yards backstroke.

The carnival was opened by Cr E. J. Smith, chairman of the City Council General Committee, who congratulated the University Club on conceiving the idea to send a team of New Zealand University swimmers to Australia, and on the performances of the members there. The Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, was also present at a later stage. The results were Men’s Events 50 Yards Men’s Freestyle Championship. Record; 25 2-ssec, W. J. Jarvis, 1947.—5. W. Jarvis 1, J.
