STATE HOUSING

PROVINCIAL ALLOCATIONS PA WELLINGTON. Mar. 25. The following information on State housing was released to-day by the Minister in charge of housing, Mr Hackett:—During January and February, 1949, the total number of houses let or relet throughout North Auckland was 79, Waikato and Bay of Plenty 42, Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay 16, Taranaki 20, Wellington, Manawatu and Wairarapa 71. Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast 18. Canterbury 48, Otago 18, and Southland 10. Of these, 163 were granted to applicants eligible for the preference extended to certain classes of ex-servicemen. Applications in hand on February 28 totalled 47.676, 12,696 from ex-servicemen and 34,980 civilians. From the inception of the Government’s present scheme to date, 28,123 new tenancies had been made available.
