WAR MEMORIAL PROPOSALS
Sir.—Now that public suggestions for a Dunedin war memorial are being asked for, may I with diffidence suggest something which is a little different from the usual conception of such memorials? Public opinion would probably not support a large expenditure on a nonutilitarian affair, but what I am suggesting would not be an extravagant cost and at least would have the claim of being serenely beautiful. That is, a water fountain, such as is possessed by the citv of NaDiei. With hidden coloured lights claying on the up-flung sprays of water, it is a singularly effective and impressive sight. Other additions to make it appropriate to the needs of a memorial could be easily thought out. And what better place to erect it than the space at the Octagon from which an unsightly erection has recentlv been removed? I hope those who have seen and appreciated Napier’s water fountain will give us their ideas on this subject.—l am, etc., W. H. S.
