RABBIT BOARDS

Sir,—Mr R. C. Read speaks of “ waving a big stick.” I think it was his side played that part. The committee that was set up at a former public meeting invited members of the Rabbit Destruction Council to address -ratepayers who would be affected by the formation of a rabbit district. They were good enough to consent to send three speakers. We (the committee) arranged the time and place of the meeting they were to address, in order to give everybody a chance to hear the full facts, which all must, admit we got in a straightforward manner.

I am not going to take up your space in following Mr Read in all his ramblings, as he starts at the town of Lawrence and proceeds as far as the city of Moscow. Like others, he is concerned about clause 80 in the Act. I cannot do better than refer him to a letter in your columns of the 16.3.49, under the nom de plume “ Facte.” Mr Read’s letter is purely political. If he wishes to pursue that course he may, but I am not going to be a party to it, any more than to say that I was told by two gentlemen that they were not supporters of the present Government, but the Government deserves credit for being the first to approach this problem In a realistic way. Mr Read assumes the land in future is to be controlled by workers. All I will say to that is this, if it be workers I will have no fault to find.—l am. etc., Rongahere. Jas. McGovern.
