MR FRASER’S ABSENCE
LIKELY TO BE OF SHORT DURATION PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 24. Although no official confirmation was available to-night, it can be taken for granted that the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, will attend the conference of Commonwealth Prime Ministers to be held in London on April 23 to discuss urgent defence and constitutional problems. An official announcement is expected early next week. Mr Fraser, who will travel by air, will probably leave New Zealand in sufficient time to arrive in London several days before the start of the conference. His absence from New Zealand is expected to be of relatively short duration. The annual conference of the Federation of Labour is due to begin in Wellington on May 17 and that of the Labour Party on Mav 21 It is thought that Mr Fraser will wish to be back in the Dominion in time for these two conferences, more particularly as there is to be a general election this year. During Mr Fraser’s absence from New Zealand the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, will be Acting Prime Minister.
