FINAL MATCHES

Borton Cup Hangs in Balance The final matches of the North Otago Cricket Association’s major competition for the Borton Cup will be commenced on Saturday afternoon. The leading teams, Oamaru A and Albion, will meet for the second time this season. On the first occasion the match resulted in a win on the first innings for Albion, which has so far been unbeaten this season in the seven matches it has played. On the other hand, Oamaru A has played eight matches with three first-innings losses and four outright wins to make it one point ahead of Albion. Competitions points are:—

The matches which were commenced on March 12 and could not be completed last Saturday because of rain have been abandoned. As the match between Union and Kurow played at Kurow on the first day was completed after extra time had been played by mutual consent Union has been awarded a first innings win. Although Union secured an outright win on this occasion it was agreed at a meeting of the association on March 21 to award five points, provided other matches could be completed last Saturday, and if this was not possible to award a first innings win. As play was not possible, Union has therefore been awarded a three-point victory. The match between Oamaru and Albion on Saturday may not necessarily decide the outcome of the competition. If Oamaru secures a first innings or outright win it will place this team three or six points respectively ahead of Albion. If on the other hand Albion secures a first innings win it will hold the Borton Cup for the first time since 1933 or the second time in the history of the club. As can be seen from the points Albion has only played seven matches compared with eight matches for four other teams and nine matches for Union. If Albion is beaten on the first innings in the final match it will have the opportunity to play Kurow to give Albion eight matches in the competition. The draw for Saturday is:— Seniors.—Kurow v. Waitaki, at Kurow; Oamaru B v. Union, at Waitaki No 2; Albion v. Oamaru A, at Waitaki No. 1. Juniors.—Representative matches against Waitaki Sub-association at Kurow and Otekaike. Third Grade.—Enfield v. Railway, at Waitaki; Waitaki B v. Waitaki A, at Waitaki; St. Kevin’s A v. St. Kevin’s B, at St. Kevin’s; Union v. Albion, King George’s Park.
