ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
ADDRESS ON ACTIVITIES Speaking to an audience of some 60 members of the Hard of Hearing League, Mr L. Millar, secretary of the Otago Acclimatisation Society, in discussing the objects and the work of the society, covered many interesting phases and in particular the difficulties encountered when the society was established in January, 1863. Mr Millar stated that the natural hatch-
ing of fish reached extraordinary proportions when suitable weather conditions prevailed, but the young fish had to meet many hazards, these being mainly the larger fish, shags (which were prolific eaters of fish), eels and the angler. The speaker also briefly referred to the possibility of the use of fertilisers in the streams and rivers for the feeding of fish. An interesting address concluded with a survey of the liberation of game birds and a description of the fish hatching and game farm at Waitati. A welcome was extended to Mrs HurdWood. of Hamilton, the original organiser
of the league within the Dominion, who briefly addressed the meeting.
