GROCERS’ ASSISTANTS
CLAIMS FOR NEW AWARD PA , WELLINGTON. Mar. 9 No agreement was reached on a number of important clauses when the Conciliation Council sat to-day to consider claims for a new award for retail grocers’ assistants and drivers, and the council will sit again to-morrow. The award is,intended to apply to all parts of New Zealand except the northern district. The employees, for whom Air A. W. Croskery is agent, are asking for a fiveday week of 40 hours and for a change in opening and closing hours, the main effect of which would ba to eliminate the late night. The new wage rates sought are a minimum of £7 10s for workers 21 years of age and over, £8 5s to £9 15s for departmental managers, and £8 10s to £lO for branch managers. The present award prescribes £6 18s 9d for adult workers and £7 9s 3d for branch managers. The employers’ counter claims on these clauses follow substantially the provisions of the present award. Mr H. M. Hopper is Conciliation Commissioner and Mr R. M. Barker is agent for the employers.
