DESERTER SENTENCED

LEFT SHIP AT AUCKLAND A frank admission that he took a position ashore because the “ opportunity occurred,” was made by Edward Dominic Kelly, aged 27, who was charged before Mr W. H. Bundle, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning with having deserted from the British ship Rimutaka at Auckland on January 13. Kelly who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Mr J C. Robertson, who appeared for the' New Zealand Shipping Company, said the accused had been a steward and also a cook on the ship, but was a butcher by occupation, and had been employed by a firm of butchers in Dunedin. He apparently deserted with another man who had been dealt with on Saturday.
