OBITUARY
MR JOHN S. DEAKER Mr John Sherlock Deaker, well known in Dunedin athletic and amateur theatrical circles, died yesterday afternoon. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and later held a teaching appointment there for a short time before joining the staff of the now defunct Free Press, at Balclutha, in 1906. In 1906 he joined the advertising staff of the Evening Star Company and remained there until his retirement through ill health last year. Well known as an amateur entertainer, Mr Deaker was also prominent as an athlete and gained considerable success in walking events. He was a member of the Albion Cricket Club and the Zingari-Richmond Football Club in his younger days. More recently he has been attached to the St. Clair Bowling Club. . Mr Deaker is survived by .a daughter, Mrs G. Small, of St. Clair, and three sons, Messrs Arthur Deaker, a member of the staff of the Southland Boys’ High School, Mr Cyril Deaker, a school teacher at Omakau, and Mr j. Boyd Deaker,. a barrister and solicitor, of Dunedin.
